The problem when a male character has problems with the female love interest is that they can't introduce a girl for him to fall back on that's too ugly or a horrible person because that just makes him look desperate, but she also can't outshine the female love interest either. It doesn't help that they specifically create all this nonsensical drama around the female love interest and it just makes her look bad too.
It's best to just not introduce characters like this because they're so plain and simple in design you only see the good things about them and it lets your imagination fill in the blanks, which makes them always look better even if they're less physically attractive than the female love interest.
