Why does this thread almost always have two types of people - those that have almost all the obvious picks (2001, Barry Lyndon, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Kurosawa etc) and those that have movies only a small community has heard of?

Probably because people who are more 'entry level' leans towards common picks while the others have found something more personnal in the more obscure stuff.
