This. It's known as the "Google bubble". Basically their algorithm presents you with content based on your history and declared preferences (likes, favourites, subscriptions), meaning that after reaching a certain critical mass, you will just be presented with iterations of the same content over and over again.
The only way to bring new content into the loop is to go searching for things you're interested in outside of Youtube and find links to related Youtube videos. It becomes almost a chore to ensure that you don't end up with seven different channels' versions of "Top 10 Movie Fight Scenes" cluttering up your recommendations.
For a site with millions of daily uploads, it's a pretty major flaw, but then lots of other people would just get annoyed at having to wade through pages and pages of uninteresting shit if it worked in any other way.
