In any event, I've dedicated an almost obscene level of thought into how one would go about adapting Pokemon into a live action movie, and it seems like it would be extraordinarily difficult.
The problem is that the narrative of the games are extremely linear and repetitive and not at all cinematic. The entire thrust of the plot is in collecting pokemen and defeating gym leaders. You can make a decent first film by introducing Ash and Pikachu and having him explore the world catching Pokemen and culminating with a climactic Pewter city gym battle. The trouble is, what comes after that? Just do the same thing eight times over? That's super boring and wouldn't really sustain eight movies.
Granted, it would be super cool to see that world brought to life. I don't now.

Yeah, you would almost certainly have to plan on making a metric fuckton of movies in order to make it work. It would probably work best to forgo the Animu route and focus on Ash and Gary and their rivalry, the end goal of the franchise being seeing the two of them battle each other as for the title of Pokemon League Champion (I feel like I just regrew my cherry for typing that).
Hope they don't try Max Payne again. Alan Wake should be left alone. Just about every zombie should be left alone.
Maybe a GTA miniseries if it isn't a direct adaptation, GTA games typically have some entertaining dialogue so that could cross mediums.

I think it could work if you were change around the whole gym leader plot device slightly. Definitely don't go with eight badges, that's way too repetitive, but if you were to adapt in such a way as to forgo the Gym Badge system, but keep some sort of Pokemon League element as a plot device, you might be able to narrow it down to a trilogy.
Granted since everything has to be a cinematic universe these days, I think there is a lot of things you could do within the Pokemon world in general that doesn't necessarily have to revolve around Ash/Red.
But dayum, now that you brought up the Pewter Gym battle as a climax, I'm envisioning Ash beating Geodude and gloating, then Brock throwing a second Pokeball and who bursts out but a 30 foot long demonic looking Onyx in all it's big budget Hollywood glory, and it triggers my nostalgia.

Yeah, I believe they did as a matter of fact. It was during the press tour, the director said something about how the whole genetic frankenstein plot reminded somebody of Mewtwo and that inspired the design of that particular stage of Dren's physiology. There are a few "geek culture" references hidden throughout that movie if I remember it correctly.
