The only other "good" vampire series at the time was twilight. Kids got tired of romance and needed something macabre. Cirque Du Freak was great in filling that YA niche, Demonata too

The Darren Shan books came out years before Twilight, and honestly they were even worse than Twilight. All his books read like edgy fanfiction, although to be fair the Demon ones were much better than the vampire ones.
