never read it. What's it about? Is it shit?
>>
>>67880622
no, its actually pretty fuckin good
>>
>>67880647
I'm not convinced.
>>
>>67880622
Great book. It collects a lot of very interesting concepts and delivers a unique dystopia. The ending is great.

Don't you read?
>>
>>67880447
The zero theorem is sort of like brave new world.
>>
>>67880753
>dystopia
I like this. Interest is rising.

>>67880758
I'm halfway thru about 5 books currently.
>>
>>67880792
>The zero theorem
One of the worst flicks I watched last year.
>>
>>67880845
Its a flip-book, not a flick.
>>
>>67880622
People often reference society becoming more like 1984, but Brave New World predicted so much more, both are good. You should read them both.
>>
>>67880447
They can't, it would have too much group and child sex.
>>
>>67880622
It's about a future that seemed horrible to the people of 1930's but that's actually pretty sweet by today's standards, which is part of what it foretold would happen.
>>
>>67880905
Kek, they could just imply it, but even that probably wouldn't appeal to the masses. Either way a film would be highly appropriate considering how much of the books predictions have come too fruition.

>>67880940
>actually pretty sweet by today's standards

Pls stop

You know it's true.

I think he's saying that the majority strive for the wage slave bohemian lifestyle of constant chemical-induced satisfaction and casual sex to soothe their stunted ego, and that is exactly what the plebs of brave new world strove for.
>>
It's already done. It's called Demolition Man.
>>
>>67881094
>>67881129
Oh, my bad, the way it was phrased made it seem like you thought it was a sweet future by today's standards.
>>
>>67880447
i'm not sure a faithful adaptation would have much appeal - it's at its core a book for misanthropes and frankly bizarre in narrative structure
>>
>>67881191
It is, by today's standards. Its a virtual utopia.

The secret is that today's standards are shit.
>>
>>67881210
Misanthropes deserve to be catered to, too!
>>
>>67881223
Yeah, too bad really.
>>
>>67880622
its the opposite of Orwell's 1984. instead of oppression by constant surveillance, family is made a dirty word, constant distractions of mindless entertainment and casual sex preventing any sort of individuality to develop. no need to oppress them by force, they dont have any beliefs to force out.

great book
>>
>>67881792
The weirdest thing for me reading brave new world is imagining what existence he was contrasting it against. Was the world ever really better than this?
>>
>>67880753
>a transient thespian self-flagellating because no one else likes Shakespeare
>a great ending
>>
>>67880529
Not sure of he could handle it
>>
>read this senior year of high school in 2009 Brit Lit class
>overwhelming majority of the class failed to see anything wrong with the world portrayed in BNW yet couldn't shut up about 1984
it's probably only gotten worse since then
>>
>>67881985
No, it's based entirely on nostalgia and "In my day, things were better!"
>>
>>67882001
Oh shut up and take a half-dose of soma.
>>
>>67881985
Huxley was himself very anti-drugs until he started taking them himself and then he was a huge proponent of them, even being fed acid on his death bed. There's a moment every drug addict experiences, their introduction to drugs, which created a schism in the person they were vs the person the become, the person that knows the short cut to feeling good at any time, and in that moment there's a sort of loss of innocence. One could make the argument that Huxley's world is one in which everyone in political power experiences this drug introduction / loss of innocence and decides the rest of the world must follow suit. Orwell wrote about a world that was the natural conclusion of nuclear weapons. Huxley wrote about a world that was the natural conclusion of Soma.
>>
>>67880622
its a very likely future

degeneracy is encouraged
people are drowned in entertainment
>>
>>67880447
I think the original TV movie did it right, but I wouldn't mind a current adaptation now that we live in the Brave New World.

Who would you pick to play John?
>>
>>67882630
John Hamm. He has the best "Are you people fucking serious?" expression in the industry.

Second choices would be Edward Norton, Chris Evans, Guy Pierce
