The whole show has people calling him an asshole, "but not really, deep down he must be good!", basically fooling themselves, because Jimmy has a silver tongue.
We as an audience don't really know what the deal is with him, we don't fully know how much he'll keep his word every time he makes a promise, we don't know what happened with his father when he was young, we don't know about his degree.
We're on a ride with him, we trust his words, and that's all the information we're given.
The less people know Jimmy, the more they like him. The ONLY person who has known him for a lifetime is the one treating him the worst.
He'll keep acting nice, and smiling, and crying when he's sad, and we'll get to emphatise with him, and feel sorry, and we'll see his point. But he'll always be one of the worst scumbags onscreen at any given moment.
Just like Breaking Bad was about a guy becoming more and more of an egomaniac, selfish and violent (or rather slowly revealing that it's what he was all along), Better Call Saul is about a guy slowly revealing he is an irredeemable scumbag. He will get more and more evidently selfish, his lies will become bolder, until he will isolate himself from everyone he knows, so we get to the starting point of Breaking Bad, when he is doing everything by himself and treats Mike just as a coworker/accomplice.
