Also Franco is garbage

>>67864388
In the book Jake Epping caused earthquakes accross the world by saving JFK. Years later they only got stronger, everything near San Andreas is lost, and nuclear accidents happened, crushing the USA, the world and most likely the universe, no WWIII involved.
The Greencard dialogue sounded cool though, I wonder why they left that in the series finale.
>>
>>67864617
I havent seen the finale yet. Do they have a nuclear war instead of earthquakes?

I didnt like the books ending. Earthquacks outta nowhere.

I was also slighty sad tk see no Derry in the show.
>>
>>67864948
Everything looks like fallout, Al's diner is gone, Harry Dunning lives like a badass survivor, but they don't develop that much the alternate present.
>>

I actually cried like 3 times in the last 15 minutes

So who the fuck was that hobo looking guy following Franco everywhere?

I assume you are talking about Yellow Card Guy
In the book he was kind of a "lost traveller" and sort of a guardian of the portal, if I'm not mistaken
And I think there were more of them, one commited suicide

ah fair enough, does the ending in the book resemble the tv adaptation at all?

Was ep 7 shit to anyone else? I liked the whole thing but that one just felt so slow and drawn out. Maybe it's that amnesia plots are so old and soapy but that one felt light and 8 felt overfull imo

Wish there was more Yellow Card stuff like in the book

any similar films or mini-series to this? I loved every episode, guess I'm a sucker for romantic 60's
>>
>>67867686
Guess it's your first king book. Digression is basically what he does best, he's good at building worlds, settings, tone, characters, etc. But his plots can fall flat towards the climaxes which is something he freely admits
>>
Why didn't they just shoot to miss at the president in the first place? That would scare him off then they could leave an anonymous tip to the police afterwards
>>
>>67863347
Franco should leave his fingers from my pure aryan waifu
>>
>>67867963

Yeah it is, just recently started reading English literature in English (not my native language) after i absolutely loved McCarthy and Matheson.
>>
>>67868083
King has a library of good books, but his greatest works tend to be his "short" stories (some are still like 100-200 pages long). I'd definitely recommend his short story collections (Night Shift, Skeleton Crew, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, etc.).

As for novels, some of his best are The Stand (though it's like 1500 pages), Misery, The Mist, Pet Sematary, The Long Walk, and Road Work.

Also, if you love McCarthy, try Hemingway. The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms are fantastic places to start.
>>
Where does this rank among King adaptations?
>>
>>67863347
i fucking hate james franco so much
>>
>>67868363

mmkay thanks, i'll look into Hemingway.
>>
>>67865818
They're kinda like MIB or bald dudes from Fringe, looking over time loops, but since Al kept jumping basically every day - their minds get all fucked up. I don't remember much, but i think every one of these time jumps Al did created a different parallel reality and there's like thousand of them because of that

>>
I really enjoyed this series.

11-22-63 is one of the few King books Ive not read, but I could sense the Kingisms in the show, seems like its was likely a pretty good adaptation of the book.

The basic story arc is simple enough for 8 eps. The period settings & wardrobe are excellent. Acting was about as good as you can hope for in a King adaptation. All in all, it was fine work.

Among the best of the King stuff (shining/misery/shawshank/standbyme), imo better than any of the made-for-tv adaptations, including the stand & it.

Also, Sarah Gadon was perfect. She was good in Enemy, but she was ideal casting for this role.
>>
>>67869470
"Time" in the book and even more so in tv series is kinda like Death in Final Destination films - it doesn't like to be disturbed and will do anything to change it back. They would've never survived together.
>>67870064
>she was ideal casting for this role
Nah, Elizabeth Debicky is a perfect casting, she was supposed to be REALLY tall.

> I didn't understand why The world became Fallout when Kennedy wasnt assassinated.

Because Steven King is a shitty writer who doesn’t know jack shit about history, so he just went with the standard “everything goes to shit because!” meme and also of course, the “you can’t change history” meme…

I’ll watch this series once I can download all the episodes but the first time I heard of it, I knew it was going to be predictable crap.

Had a good pilot and 10/10 waifu bait.

Originally I thought this was going to be a web of conspiracies, cause and effect, butterfly effect shit but it was just 6 episodes of spying on Lee Harvey Oswald

Franco is so damn uncharismatic in this, zero chemistry with Sadie, his emotions were so placid, he always seem to have a smug grin on even when he realizes he will never be with the love of his life
>>

but you can change history in this story - it was changed

the meme is: 'everything happens for a reason' or 'any changes to history only make things worse overall' or some bullshit like that

Apparently the book resorts to rampant earthquakes (timequakes?). Some manner of geopolitical coldwar shitstorm resulting in a nuclear war would have been more interesting in a Man in the High Castle sort of alternate future. A shame that bit of the story never got fleshed out.

King is actually a pretty good writer, but his plots are usually simplistic and he's not great at pacing. His ability to create interesting characters, settings and themes is what has led to his ridiculous success.

>>67870272

>>

>>

Its a complete cop out. Fuck King.
>>
>>67868363

Hemingway and McCarthy are polar opposites in terms of writing style.

I tried reading All the Pretty Horses right after For Whom the Bell Tolls, and it was a huge mistake. Hemingway is the epitome of terse, action-oriented writing, whereas you'd have to be an English professor to get through McCarthy without consulting a dictionary at least once.
>>
>>67870689

>Some manner of geopolitical coldwar shitstorm resulting in a nuclear war would have been more interesting in a Man in the High Castle sort of alternate future

Yes, in the most retarded fashion; Kennedy isn’t assassinated = planetary earthquakes!

Then like all time travel / alt-history movies, the hero goes back and resets history to the original timeline.

how is it a cop out when its established that all the going back in time shit is fucking up the space time continuum or whatever? in the book the yellow card guys try to warn him and end up spread so thin by being multiplied into too many parallel universes that they end up all retarded and insane.
>>
>letting a pure aryan waifu go just like that
>>
>>67872185
You don't try to tackle a plot of such interest such as the JFK assassination and then shoe horn this sci-fi if you fuck with the past it will fuck you back mess. If it was some bullshit time travel about something no one gave a fuck about then you can do whatever you want with it but the JFK assassination is one of the most argued about events possibly ever. I am not even saying the book should have tried to piece together who exactly killed the man but considering the subject of the novel, this ending left a lot to be desired. Its as if King used this tragedy as bait to sell more books because he doesn't give a true and fair representation of what the book was supposed to do, what life would have been like if JFK lived

The space time continuum or whatever is the cop-out and allows the story to follow the predictable path; history get fucked up for no discernible reason forcing the hero goes back and reset history to the original timeline.

If you're going to do an alternate history story, it helps if you actually know some history so you can avoid doing the same lame thing as everybody else who doesn't know shit about history.

Either that, or just skip the historical stuff and get on with the story (as in The Man In The High Castle).

>>
This was great fuck you niggers that didn't like it.

It had a theme, it stuck to it. It had King bullshit weird tangents because its a King adaptation, From a Buick 8 had five chapters before the car even gets there.

The whole point was the story of Jake trying to fix things that he knows can't be fixed. He spends the show trying to hold onto his idea of reality and fighting to keep things the way he wants them. It doesn't really matter the specific cause of the apocalypse, all that mattered was that Jake knew he fucked up.

He meets Harry in the altfuture who tells him just how much he fucked up and he didn't even do well by saving him from retardation. So he cancels what he did but still isnt sure until he meets future Sadie and realizes that he should just roll with life and it'll work itself out optimally

Favorite King book and favorite TV adaptation except the first parts of dark tower

he met a love of his life, broke off completely clean (not that this is a good thing, but at least it's clean) and is probably super appreciative of a lot of modern stuff he might've taken for granted before.

He also basically got to live without financial stress for years due to knowing all the bets.

He could easily make himself rich in the present too if he wanted to. Just go buy a bunch of gold in the past and bring it with you. Or try some banking accounts but I don't know how that would pan out 50 years later

Yeah, blame SK for that. In the book, there's no clothespin but he's a really nihilist and OCD, never consummated the marriage and put a broom between them in bed.

King can't write tight structured narrative, he has to put these sideshows in or the book seems even more full of filler than it already is.

Thankfully the show's scar is much smaller. In the book he goes full Joker on her, dyed hair and all, and leaves one side of her face lopsided forever.

Just finished the last episode.

Show really sucked. It was good up until episode 5. Maybe it's the book that sucks, I never read it. Can't blame the show, blame the source I guess. Really stupid that nothing is accomplished at the end. Literally the entire show was a waste of time. He just goes back and resets everything. Also they didn't use the same actress to play her at the end? Wtf. Wish I got my time back from watching this trash.
>>
>>67881372
So are you saying you want everything to be undone ;)?

More seriously, I think the show is a bit of a bait and switch. I went in for JFK time travel shenanigans and it became a love story. Which is fine for me because Sadie was GOAT. I wondered how they would tackle the ending, but I did always expect it to get reset just because due to narrative convention I guessed that the changes to the future would end up terribly.

Halfway through, the ending I was expecting was Jake bringing Sadie to the future with him resetting the past. I knew that the time travel rules allowed for stuff to be duplicated given how the guy always brought back meat from the same butcher in the past.

Heres a rundown.

>Jake saves the president but Sadie gets shot, dies.
>Goes back to 2016
>Everything is blown to shit. IRL Fallout.
>Runs into Janitor guy he saved back in 2016
>Janitor guy tells him Kennedy was a good guy president but Wallace was elected president after him.
>Talks about riots and bombs being dropped in 1975, implies world war 3 happened.
>Jakes nopes the fuck out of there and goes back to 1960 to reset the present and to keep fucking Sadie.
>Homeless guy with the yellow card shows up and tells him he's stuck in his own loop meaning she'll die regardless if he interferes with the past.
>Jake decides not keep fucking Sadie and gives up on trying to save Kennedy/changing history.
>Jakes depressed as fuck because he wasted 3 years of his life for nothing. Googles Sadies name.
>She's a mayor in Jodie, Texas and Jake decides to go see his old blast from the past.
>Sadie is a GILF now and she's being honored for her service to Jodie by her old students at some big banquet they setup.
>Show ends with Jake giving her the "fuck me" eyes while they slow dance to a song.

So yeah, kinda lame ending.

I wish collabaroting was more common in fiction writing. Would be cool if King had someone by his side giving depth to his worlds. On the other hand I wish it was less common in TV.

fucking retard, it had nothing to do with "knowing history" or memes about time traveling.

the point is that sometimes things don't need to all be okay and bad shit needs to happen for the world and people to grow and even be happy.

there's more than that as well, but it's basically about the human condition numbnuts, not fucking history.

Almost the same as the book, close enough I guess. But still after a while shit got boring.

For a 'you can't fuck with the past' kind of story it didn't do it well enough. The level of 'push back' didn't make sense. He mad massive fucking changes and could have left after shoving the roommate it the psych ward. What I'm getting at is the push back was purely for drama rather than trying to fuck his shit up all day every day.

He should have gotten past cancer way before he saved Kenny.

lee tries to kill kennedy
>>
What was the sudden motivation last episode to kill Kenedy?

Just chilling in the park, and suddenly 'hey killing Kenedy is the best thing to show em what I can do!'. Until that shot Epiphany he never wanted to do this, and the shit that pushed him over was being paranoid. I'm not versed enough in US politics at the time to know why killing him would serve Oswald's 'marx agenda', he even gave them a fucking letter.

Was the russian wife basically a mail order bride from the get go? They seemed like they were into each other at the airport, but then /something/ happened once they came to America, be it he had no money, it wasn't magical happy land like she expected (basically a gold digging bitch that wanted a green card).
>>
Why don't more people find the 'portal'. There were 3 randoms right the fuck there attacking him.

>>67887382

>>
Most of the questions in this thread are taken care of in the book.
>Not going back again
This is explained by the yellow card man - every time you go back, you create a new timeline and make reality more unstable. Thus going back could result in the world being torn apart.
>why apocalypto world
I found a full list directly from the book somewhere. I can post it if people want it.

I thought through the whole series that either Sadie would die and Jake would reset and live happily ever after with her after realising she was the point of his existence in the past, or he'd take her back to the future.
The ending was so much better than I expected.

>>
>>67893318

In the book, it's more the problem that the butterfly effects he's making create resonance problems even after a reset. It's really just King trying to shut the narrative down.
>>
Would have been better if the last 20 minutes had it's own episode, then you could have a less rushed ending.
>Jake goes back to the future and sees the consequences of his actions, so he decides to try and save Sadie over and over again until he's an old man, at which point he gives up and finds her in the present and dances with her.
That could have been a whole episode.

>>
>>67896312
That's not how it works. She picks you and if she wants to pick all those anons thats her right.
>>
>>67895710
I don't remember. i have a faint recollection of jake and sadie at least heading to maine but then again it's been like 5 years since i read the book. i figure bringing people over is a gray area like when you go there you create a new world line so if another person went in after jake had been in for 60 seconds irl time which would be an unknown amount of time like even a few years(say 1960) then you would of course end up in a different 1958

also If when you turn back right after you got to 1960 is it still 2 minutes later if you were only gone for 5 seconds? you could pass time like 20 times quicker like if you could step in and out in 5 seconds in 2 minutes you could have passed 40 minutes of irl time and if you did this for years you would age slower compared to other people and that would be pretty cool
>>
Why didn't Sadie remember Jake from when he showed up in the diner and went all stalker on her? He went back to 2016 after that but didn't go through again to reset it.
>>
>>67886021
Me too. The scene with Franco and Sadie outside the soda shop brought the feels. Hell pretty much any scene with Sadie in the finale did it.
>>
So could Jake have just alerted the Secret Service to avoid the Dealey Plaza route?
>>
>>67896457
maybe she did maybe she didn't. he met jake for like 2 minutes 58 years ago

iirc in the book jake reset the whole thing and when she danced with old sadie she said he looks familiar like if she had some sort of connection or subconscious memories from the different timelines

Serious question.

Why didn't Jake just kill Oswald and return to the future to confirm if he's the assassin or not?

>He didn't want to risk killing an innocent man.

Yea, uh, that only works if you ignore the fact he can RESET Oswald's death in the case of him actually being innocent. Jake could have killed everyone in Dallas, one by one, resetting and checking as he goes, until he found the right person that gave the desired future. I mean, you didn't even have to worry about the Kennedy assassination at all honestly.

So killing Oswald and saving Kennedy didn't work out. Maybe killing some random jackass on the street changes the world for the better. Maybe nudging the market in the right direction avoids the recession in 2008. Maybe prevent some wars in Africa or the middle east. Why would you ever stop trying to improve the world with rock solid, reliable information on how to do so?

>Time always makes things worse if you fuck with the past!

Sounds like a quitter's excuse to me.

On that note, hilariously unbelievable usage of a time portal that resets. First guy in that shit would be running the world and living out groundhog day fantasies until he died of cancer.

>>
>>67897197

Oswald was in the Soviet Union from October 1959 to June 1962. That's a perfect excuse that basically allows this story to even be possible (and even then, King has to burn some months away with fucking amnesia). So, you kill Oswald at the first opportunity and if you're wrong, you gotta wait 2-3 more years. The prudent thing to do is to spend a while making sure, with is what Jake tries, but of course you can still kill Oswald way before. 11.22.63 if you're not suffering from fucking amnesia....

step aside plebs, patrician coming through:
this miniseries was some nice little fix for the all too common post Mad Men depression among us privileged /tv/ posters
id say that visually it was en par and it made me go in a trance like state just staring in scenery, places, cars, people
story wise it was weak like you would expect from a King novel (I read that shit in my teens and was cringing at the plebishness back then already)
I like Franco, he looks and smiles really likeable, but thats just my personal opinion.
Lots of people criticized his wooden acting in the warehouse scene, but imo at that moment it really sinks in that history forces you to make big sacrifices when you try to change things. So he kinda just accepted the fact that this was the inevitable outcome and it made him somber, just how he later carried himself in the interogation and conversation with the spook.
Ill give it a 7/10

Why are the evil Jews removed from the story? Oh, yeah, the series was produced by them, they made this that they wouldn't implicate Jews,

i would've just killed oswald regardless. even if he's innocent, he's collateral damage in the grand scheme of things. you just gotta be cold blooded, son
>>

Yeah, too bad it doesn't even make sense based on the idiotic rule in the show with past not wanting to be changed, since Sadie isn't actually supposed to die prematurely in the first place, so her dying because of Jake is fucking with the past more than if she didn't die.
Or am I missing something?
>>

The book was very different, hence my anger.

In the book the Jews beat Jake/George to a bloody pulp, he couldn't walk properly, so the premise for Sadie being there related to jake having a limp, she was there to help him.

In the book Jake had his spleen removed and knee practically broken.

In the TV version the Cowboys beat him up.

so was this fate? a fate made by "time"? or just a big huge coincidence that sadie happened to drive by the moment he popped out of the time portal into 1960 and then ends up becoming engaged to her in dallas?
>>
What if the yellow card man is Jake Epping

Think about it....
>>
>>67910597
Oy Vey! Was it really the Jews?
>>
>>67907971
I liked what he did with the accent. And he's Australian, too. I don't often hear a real New Orleans accent in movies. Like fuck what they did with Costner in JFK.
>>
If jake reset it and killed oswald wouldn't that mean ed would still be alive because he never went back and got cancer from "the past pushing back"

Yeah, the main villain(who attacked Jake) was introduced in the TV version but never played a prominent part, his name was ROTH.

King portrayed the Jews as running the underground mafia whereas TV went out of its way to mention La Cosa Nostra
>>
I just want to pop in here to tell everybody not to waste their time with King novels. He has interesting ideas and really enjoy his character/ world building but the man can't finish a story to save his life. Don't even try The Stand, which most consider his best book. It was great until the last third.

I do enjoy him masturbating all over the 50s and 60s though, admittedly.

Keep her, Bill. Sadie is all mine, and I'll kill anyone that tries to steal her.

How is King not bankrupt? Makes sense why it's not in the show though
>>
>>67910214
I know, makes you cringe doesn't it
>>
>>67885693
It's historically accurate because everyone was illiterate as fuark back then.
>>
I would have gone back and reset every 3 years just for Sadie, you don't give up a woman like that
