I actually didn't know what a urinal cake was, hence the confusion. Fuck, that is disgusting.
>>
>>67849664
And the zoo scene too.
>>

Fuck you the movie was 100x better than the book

The copious descriptions of what everyone is wearing in the book are pretty hilarious and they happen constantly.

It actually wasn't better, not that it wasn't great in and of itself.

>Though the film had several high profile male filmmakers interested in directing, the producers opted for a female director, hoping to avoid public outcry regarding the depictions of violence against women.[9] Despite signing Harron to the project, the film was mired in controversy before production began, due in large part to the legacy of the book’s release.[10] As Harron began production, the crew had to contend with threats of protest, as the issue of violence in the media became crystallized by the Columbine shootings. Campaigns against the film continued throughout production, the Feminist Majority Foundation condemning the film as “misogynist,” and the Canadians Concerned About Violence in Entertainment (C-CAVE) convincing restaurant owners to deny Harron permission to film in their establishments.[11]

That's why.

The book was a chore to read at some parts, I like the film more.

Yeah, the mirrored background irks me.

Christian Bale's portrayal of Patrick Bateman was based off Tom Cruise
>For Bale, finding the Patrick Bateman within him meant venturing into the darkest, vilest pits of human pain and suffering: Tom Cruise’s eyes. Bale and the director of American Psycho, Mary Harron, discussed “how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was,” and how he was always “watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave.”
>Eventually, Bale found exactly that while watching David Letterman when Tom Cruise happened to be the guest. A strange thing Bale noticed about Tom Cruise was his “intense friendliness” that had “nothing behind the eyes.”

http://bbook.com/film/mary-harron-reveals-inspiration-behind-patrick-bateman/
>>
>>67852815
It's funny because Tom Cruise appears in the book. Bateman chats him up in an elevator.
>>
Couldn't finish the book. About three quarters in that description of Bateman using the hole saw on that girl was too much. To think I used to be an edgy /b/tard. Is the movie just as bad?

>>
>>67853747
100% yes he did. Don't let people tell you he didn't because "the lawyer saw Paul Allen!!!" A huge part of the movie, and book, is that all yuppies look the same. That's why Patrick keeps getting mistaken for a Marcus. The lawyer didn't really see Paul, he just thought he did.

It's much more clear in the book.

>>
>people complaining about the long descriptions not realizing that's part of what makes him a psycho
>>
>>67850966

No. Book was a satire that bordered on horror while the movie almost was pure comedy. In the book Bateman is pretty much an autist while Bale plays him almost comical
>>
>>67849664
That rat thing is just brutal. I'm not sure the movie-viewing public is ready for that kind of thing. I agree they should have done it, but I can understand why they wouldn't include things like that. He also goes crazy and eats some vials of crack later in the book, and goes to a U2 concert where he realizes Bono is Satan. There's a lot of fun stuff in that book that just couldn't make the cut.
>>
>>67853747

The point is that not even Bateman knows what was real and what wasn't and neither does the reader so he is stuck in his own personal hell
>>
>>67850976

Especially since, if you know 80s fashion, they're all wearing hilariously mismatched outfits.

>>
>there are actually people here that think the movie is better than the book

>>
>>67853908
It's much more clear in the book that he did not kill anyone and that he's simply insane, bipolar or schizophrenic. The scene at the end with the maid causually cleaning up the gore and body parts proves that. It's also clear in the movie, no one notices his crazy shit like when he tells the bartender he's going to murder her and play with her blood and the scene where he's dragging paul allen out of his building in a bag leaving a blood trail both the front desk guy and louis and date would have noticed.
>>
>>67854806
It's the book with all the boring shit cut out, and has Bale in his best role.
What's not to love?
>>
>>67854996
>It's also clear in the movie, no one notices his crazy shit like when he tells the bartender he's going to murder her and play with her blood
She didn't hear him because they were in a night club you stupid fucking autist, she couldn't hear what he was saying. No one notices "his crazy shit" because they're so full of themselves and up their own asses they don't realize this person is a serial killer when it's idiotically obvious.
>>
>>67853908
This. The director even admitted she was incompetent and fucked up the ending by making it seem like a hallucination
>>

Yeah but in this case the forced diversity and "muh feelings" camps are two different sides.

Nah, you're wrong.

The bar scene.showed patrick looking in the mirror when he said that shit which conveyed that he was talking to himself. Also, none of his crimes ever made the news including stabbing a kid to death in broar daylight at the zoo. And i noticed you failed to explain the other glaringly obvious points i detailed above. In the book explain the maid scene, explain how a giant mutant rat crawled up the sewer in a high rise. Explain him dragging paul allen and leaving a huge blood smear from his apartment thru the hall in the elevator and through the lobby of a rich luxury apartment building. That
shit didn't happen m8. Just like him running thru the hallway naked with a chainsaw screaming...that only happened in his mind as he was drawing the scene on the paper while he was having lunch with evelyn at crayons

I only just recently watched the movie after reading the book a while back. It's a well made movie, and if I hadn't read the book I probably would have liked it a lot more, but if you have read the book the movie almost just feels like a traler for the book. But it's obvious why the left so much material out of the movie.

GOAT movie however my only quarrel was the The movie did not capture the erraticism of Batemans thought patterns - I like how the book cuts in and out of his stream of conciousness when describing other peoples clothes, or his internal monologues about music for pages on end.

Some shit just wasn't gonna make the movie tho, namebly:

> Murdering a asian guy by slitting his throat then pouring boxes of takeout on him
> Disemboweling the chihuahua of a gay guy who comes onto him and then shooting the gay guy
> Murdering the kid at the zoo and stuffing him in a garbage can
> The cheerio being interviewed on TV
> Bateman going to see U2 to be disgusted at Bono but also gets a "Massive erection" watching him
> Cutting off an ex-girlfriends head and fucking it
>>
I like the part when he eats the canned ham like a mad man
>>
>>67861627
Because the entire book reads like one giant green text

>be me

>fucking peasants everywhere ruining my day
>see qt homeless girl
>would fuck
>go up and put dollar in her cup
>tell her I admire her struggle
>"what the fuck is your problem dude"

>>
>>67849664

>>
>>67853908
what about "feed me a stray cat"
>>
The book was just perfect, there are so many autistic scenes that never could have made it into the movie.

>When he almost has a seizure because his date offers to pay for lunch
>When he sneaks out to the beach at night during his vacation and starts digging up crabs and eating them
>When the narration inexplicably switches to third-person for a chapter

I felt like the movie was a good adaptation though. They didn't nail the tone/message, but it was enjoyable by itself as a comedy.
For the people complaining about the monotonous beginning of the book, that's the point. He describes everything, from his outfits to his acts of murder, in the same bored, disaffected way because they all mean the same thing to him: nothing
>>
I feel like Bret Easton Ellis's other books could be adapted into movies if they had the right director.
I'd like to see a grimdark Less Than Zero one that didn't completely butcher the source material.
>>
>>67849971

Persevere, whether you think it's clever or dumb it's SUPPOSED to be overwhelming and boring at times. It's a thick read, not length, it just starts to wear you down and the brief glimpses of horrendous violence are cathartic.
>>
You just know someone from /tv/ will purchase this.
>>
>>67855478

Because it wasn't really happening. That's the point, it was utter Hollywood fabrication and he's started to realise that it's not real.

Most of the murders were, don't get me wrong, but all that shit towards the end is him completely losing it.
>>
>>67860508

Movie. If you don't like it, you won't like the book and won't have to waste your time. The book is much tougher though.

Gloria Steinem. One of the biggest names in feminism and quite a bitch.

She's fine with erotica, but porn is repressive of something something rape women being enslaved because most of the people who buy it are male and like anyone who wants money panders to the male audience.

Also is pro-abortion because she thinks if guys were able to get pregnant abortions would be celebrated. (I just hate her reasoning)

Mocked the more academic feminism for being critical of the movement and moving in different directions.

Positive things you could say about her are she's against genital mutiliation, but thinks that male circumcistion is a tool of the patriarchy instead of some tribal bs that exists because tradition.

She thinks that native Americans got screwed, so that's pretty okay.

She said that trannies are infiltrators or something in the 70's and backpedaled in 2013.

because the movie sells due to its subtle level of comedy.

for example, luis carruthers character in the film is left alone peacefully, whereas in the book he begs patrick at one point to kill him out of love and patrick is too disgusted by his previous interactions with luis to consider it.

what do we get in the film? an oblivious luis who is unaware of patricks psychopathy. he still gestures to him to call him and its funny to watch patrick squirm, knowing what kind of psycho patrick is.

also reading american psycho is a trip of itself. the last 3 months have felt like half a year reading the book. alot of themes are missing such as the graphic descriptions of brand name junk, graphic sex, graphic murder, and deep discussion about musicians.
its by these intense graphic decriptions we lose the sense of hilarity in the book and then we are presented with scenes of patrick harming people or boiling pots of blood in pauls apartment with victims blood and shit smeared on the walls written "DIE YUPPIE SCUM" while walking around with a human head on his boner.

without reading the novel, the movie can come across as horrific, but when u read the novel and then sit down to watch american psycho again, you can see its watered down and planted in the funny garden. id love to explain this, but there is no explaining the book like bret easton ellis truly can.

the book is what i'd consider a test to see wether people can think or not. for example, some people would dismiss it simply as sensationalist trash.

my experience with the book has been one that goes beyond visual medium. the power to imagine these acts simply makes the idea of these characters as actual people very near real.
but i am sad they left out several notable scenes from the book. some of them make sense, some others like patrick looking at sonny bono and realising the two of them are the same soulless bastards pretending to be men. lots of good scenes in the book that are exempt.
>>
>>67849664

Boy at Zoo is still the one that sticks out the most.
>>
>>67873981
as a whole however, if the book is a 10/10 the movie is a 7/10

but dont let this dissuade you. for example.

starship troopers the book 10/10 vs movie 7/10

scanner darkly the book 10/10 vs movie 7/10

jurassic park the book 10/10 vs movie 8/10

bladerunner the book 10/10 vs movie 4/10

American psycho as a movie is better at telling the story from American Psycho the book than Bladerunner the movie is trying to tell the story of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
