It is for people who don't read the comics, and if anything it makes him more likely to be killed. The writer(s) want to keep the comic characters alive until they had them die in the comics, so those should be pretty safe until their designated death time(s), while all the non-comic characters are much more expendable and can be killed whenever they want to kill them. Keeping them around just adds an extra area where storylines can get f'd up and take them off track from the comic. (Which the idiots want to stick to).
Also as others have mentioned his actor has a new show that he is the star of, so his character is going to die soon (if he hasn't already).
