To be fair, Bart isn't entirely right. TV shows make a ton of money off viewers. Some of it is indirect, such as through advertising, while some of it is direct, such as merchandising. While the TV show producers don't really owe the audience anything, they aren't giving entertainment away for free and should, in general, try their best to entertain their audience.
