There was biblical imagery, literary imagery, political commentary. It was pretty blatant, yes, but 90% of the people who dislike the movie didn't pick up on it. Either way, it's a good thing that someone tried to inject substance into a genre that has been taking it safe for the last 15 years. Call it pleb references, you'd be right, but hopefully someone takes note and tries to take this attempt at artistry to the next level. You have to at least commend Snyder's ability to take a risk by making it deeper than any capeshit movie ever did before (still not deep, lol).
A line that bothered me in the movie was when Superman said to Batman, "The next time they shine your light in the sky, don't go to it."
But from they way Bruce and Alfred were talking, there wasn't a Gordon using the bat signal. And none of the crimes that Clark actually saw in the papers or tried to follow up on had a bat signal call Batman. It was Batman going out on his own to beat up human traffickers and track down the White Portuguese. The batsignal, when Batman used to to lure Superman for their fight, was on top of a defunct, abandoned, run down building that might have been the ruins of the old GCPD.
Is there a deleted scene of someone other than Bruce using the batsignal?
