A recent study done at Oxford University actually showed in that in the face of very stressful situations, people who did not believe in any God found their "faith" in the rational and scientific increased. Similarily, anxiety about death was greatest amongst the irreligious/undecided ("I don't know what I believe.") and the moderately religious whilst it was the absolute lowest amongst decisive atheists and those who were very religious.
I think that's pretty interesting as it says a lot about our willingness to put faith in and rely on a concept (be it science or religion) to get us through tough times. It's also why the terms "No atheist in a foxhole" kinda annoys me, because it's just not true no matter how you interpret it.
