As far as I know that phrase is more associated with fears of communism but the sentiment that people on the frontier were worried about native American rape is accurate.
Watch the Searchers though. It gives a pretty well fleshed out portrayal of the scope of native Americans and apart from a scene of slapstick comedy that will make most people, even those not in activist circles, cringe the movie really holds up in its subtle portrayal of race relations in the old west.
