Augmented Reality Game. It was an online tie-in "game" where a series of seemingly unrelated sites (I can recall Slusho being one) that usually had minimal pages or gateways with no readily apparent use. People saw some clues hidden or coded onto the pages, like Slusho could be logged into and show a map suggesting they use a deep sea ingredient (which lead to nothing in the movie). Most clues lead back to the well known Cloverfield site. It was basically an easter egg hunt with no candy.
The Dark Knight has months before ran a good ARG, where the clues people found lead them to real world locations across the world, photograph something specific for the clue (usually an alphabetical letter), and send it in. TDK ARG players finished the game and assembled a creep magazine-cutout letter from the Joker for their efforts, and it was nice. /tv/ became aware of movie ARGs and went insane over the cloverfield ARG, only be kicked in the dick because there was no payoff. It just tricked people to see the movie to attach meaning, of which there was none.
