My hope is that Rey has been building up resentment and anger over being left behind by her family, fear from being all alone on Jakku, and hatred from being hurt/attacked by the First Order, and so she's been pulling from the Dark Side her entire life and only now has been using it in a directed fashion.
When she tries to use the Light Side she finds it weak and frustrating since she's used to it being easy and feeling good instead of challenging. She has to choose between walking the hard road now or sticking to what comes naturally to her.
