I got into writing for A&E just so I could attend critic's screenings. It's as close as I can get to being alone and it's fucking glorious.
I lucked out with this phenomenon when I went to go see The Witch early last month and thank shit for that. Not only was it comfy and creepy, but I've heard many stories of that particular movie being ruined/tainted by irritating crowds.

If you're smart about it, its not that hard to do. Go to the first showing of the day, there is usually a discount on top of the matinee price. Even a movie, on the saturday or sunday after release, expect 5 people, tops.
I've sat in an imax theater all on my own. Now that I figured it out I bring a thermos of coffee from home, still in the clothes I slept in, and enjoy the comfiest movie going experience ever.
I will never understand why people prorder tickets for opening night. It's like you're actively attempting to have the most awful theater experience ever.

Last time I was in a theater all by myself was when I saw Haywire a few years ago in a fairly large theater.
I rarely go to a theater when I'm out of town unless it's a Cinebar or Alamo Drafthouse type of setup since my work with the local theater chains here will get me in for free to pretty much any showing unless it's embargoed like Star Wars was, that I had to pay for to go see opening night. I'm gonna go off on a tangent.
DCI Chrstie and Barco projectors are huge fucking pains in the ass if you need to do anything out of the norm. One job I had was doing an event that was an interview session + a doc-screening that involved simulcasting the video feed to multiple theaters. If you guys have ever seen those Hard Drives that get sent out that's what we are talking about, and these Barco units weren't having any of it when we tried to daisy chain HD SDI feeds because of just how locked down the fuckers are.
Eventually we figured out a work around with the video streaming off my laptop via a Lacie thunderbolt drive of all things and then splitting the HD SDI signal to all the Barcos so we take any type of HDCP-esc bullshit out of the process. That was one of the only jobs I never got paid for either.
