Actually the way the comics explains it is that it is actually some extension of his will, and not real super strength and has almost nothing to do with his muscles. When you see rocks and dirt hover around him during scenes, it is because of his super aura. When he lifts things or punches things, it is not in the same manner that we do and he is literally exerting the force of his will against something else. This is the only way for them to reconcile how he is able to lift up buildings or mountains or planets at a single point without those things simply crumbling under their own weight and the force applied against them at that single point. So when he is dragging that ship, he isn't actually towing it by the chain but exerting his will across the entire ship and just happens to be anchoring it to his body at the chain.
