It seemed really cheesy. Normally I'm able to get on board with that, but for a game movie about killing demons in violent fashions it felt a lot more like one of those Arcade Light-Gun shooters than a violent demon murderfest.

Not the guy you're replying to, but i think the 'i enjoyed that bit' just comes from that thrill we get from seeing something we're familiar with re-created on the big screen, it's more the novelty than the quality. Like when "Smallville" ran for ten seasons even though it was terrible-- it was the novelty of seeing those characters in a show, we'd never really had that since the Batman TV show in the 1960's, which of course was a generation or two before ours.
With better tech and better movies, we can do WAY better than Doom. You know it.
