The city would've sufffered the same amount if not more damage if the avengers hadn't been there, a lot of the casaulties and damages can be blamed on the chitauri, the avengers couldn't be everywhere at once, superman on the other hand was having a slapfight with Zod using earth as nothing more than a stage, and a lot more of the damages can be traced back to him. Superman could've fought Zod in a field, but he chose to settle it in Metropolis, the portal opened right above Manhattan, the avengers had no choice on where to fight.

You don't always immediately feel responsibiltity for things like that, they were mostly relieved that they saved the world, ethical questions wouldn't even start to appear in their minds until long after, and saying that they don't at all is disengenuous considering that a lot of Iron Man 3 and AoU is Tony dealing with the responsibility he feels over the amount of destruction, which even continues into civil war.
