They were testing the water for R rated/18 superhero movies. Blade did well but was killed by that trainwreck third film, and now were in a brave new world of capeshit blockbusters.
If they can run an adult line alongside the teen friendly toy adverts and saturday morning cartoons, well then theyve got all bases covered.
