I saw this in the theatre when I was 14, with my best friend and his 10 year old sister (his mother bought us the tickets). Good times, great movie with a cool dark aesthetic, and made my friend's sister a goth girl for quite awhile.
About OP's assertion, I don't recall his death being a thing really. Especially not compared to Heath Ledger with TDK's release.
