>buy a new camera, continue making films, make a no-budget feature film (3-4 actors, few locations, two week shoot), continue watching films, reading, lifting, living my life

or

>go to film school, get a 15k loan, network with other wannabes

What should I do? The applications close in two weeks time. The film school is under a mile from my home so going there wouldn't be a huge hassle aside from the cost. Going to film school would give me more social and professional contacts and give me the illusion of moving forward and upward in life, but I would sacrifice the time I would normally use for watching films, reading and all that independent studying stuff.

Is film school a meme or should I seriously consider it?
>>
>Is film school a meme?
Yes
>Should I consider it
No

You want to get into the industry? Go get a mass communications degree. That way if shit doesn't pan out at least you have a degree that won't get you laughed out of the room.

You will be in newsrooms and shit and yadayadayada

Thanks. I'm just having the same kind of panic that PTA had at one point - I'm 24, I'm not directing movies yet and I feel that I'm a fuck up who would benefit from going to film school.

Well, it's not really a film school, it's more like film/TV/media/documentary/radio all combined.
>>
I go to film school and i just got hired at nbc, it doesnt really matter
>>
the problem is op u might be talented and you might not be, do you have the drive to make films for the next 10 years and not just that, write scripts as well to become famous.

anyway you probably don't so go to school and get some debt.
>>
>I would sacrifice the time I would normally use for watching films, reading and all that independent studying stuff.
Nigger if you wanna make films you gotta pick up the goddam camera did you even read the quotes in your pic

Going to film school is basically "I don't have any drive to succeed so I will get fleeced out of thousands of dollars to waste 3 years of my life guilt free."
>>

Did you expect to be at the height of your career at 24? That's no age at all.
>>
school will hold your hand and guide you to improve your weak points, it can be hard to know what needs improvement but you don't need a film teacher for that. Pick up books and start putting your films out into the local scene.
I've gotten more job opportunities from churches and local events than the "networking" opportunities that college provides.

the first idea is the simplest and noblest
the desire to make movies is universal

here's a protip: socialise with students, but don't go to the uni. spend the money on cameras, accommodation, literature, actually making the product that you want to see. The education is out there, develop your craft overtime, wherever you are.

Try to bind what you learn outside of a class environment with the rigour and love of learning. Love what you do.

Just know that in three years time, either way, you'll have regrets, foibles, neuroses. It's whether or not those last three years were worth a damn, that's what matters.

I don't want to be famous. I just want to make films and stay alive.

>>67479924
I expected to have something, anything, at this point in my life. I only have one decently successful comedy sketch, 15k in savings, no debt and a shitload of crap that I have written/shot that hasn't gone anywhere.
>>

>is film school a meme
Depends how you are with learning. If you need instructions and what not or prefer a school environment then go to film school

If you can learn easily then don't and just study all the material you can and make films

I'm in the exact same boat as OP. Same age and situation.

Should I fall for the 4K prosumer camera meme or just get a simple DLSR? My budget is around 3k for a camera. If nothing else I'm prepared to start shooting on my phone seeing as Tangerine got a lot of attention for being shot entirely on an iPhone.
>>
>>67480667
Stick with DLSR. Don't try to break bank on the latest and best camera. Cameras are a tools and only the person using it makes them good.
>>
>>67480667
Don't do that. Work up to that kind of equipment. DSLR are good starters and capture good quality. Upstream Color for example was shot entirely on GH4 and that was a fucking beautiful film. Hone your skills, and then get to that kind of equipment
>>
>>67480906
It was actually a GH2 and Carruth said that working with it was a fucking nightmare. Can confirm, my current camera is GH2 and every day I want to kill myself.
>>
>>67480971
I figured it would be a nightmare. I am thinking of getting on or some blackmagic
>>
>>67480971
The GH4 is chill as fuck, though
Perfect camera
>>
>15k loan
congratulations on your future sharknado spin off
>>
>>67481150
The form factor is still the same. That's why my next camera will be something like URSA Mini/C100/C300 and the like.
>>
>>67478618
these are great flickmakers, not film desu
>>
Just major in STEM for actual money.
>>
I've just finished storyboarding my short film, which I'll be filming this year. This is the first one where I'll be hiring actors and shit for so it's going to be big.

Do you guys reckon the T5i would be good or is there a better DSLR in the same price ballpark?

Tarkovsky went to film school. Oh fuck.

Buy a RED dragon
>>
Go to school.

You don't wanna end up like Tarantino, do you?
>>
>>67480382
As long as you're not in debt that's pretty ok by me. Keep making stuff every week and you'll do ok i think.
>>
>>67483769
Let's hope so.
