Warner wants a string of succesfull movies and critical acclaim is a part of what gives a movie legs beyond the opening week. Warner Bros was absolutely reacting to Marvel Studios success and not simply using the momentum to build it's own. They needed to define themselves against Marvel so they wound up opposing everything that makes the Marvel franchises successful.
Warner's really out of touch with how to handle it's comics properties on film. They had success with Nolan's Batman films and they recognized Snyder's success with comic films in the mid-late 2000's so they figured they could just replicate, not paying attention at all to how Marvel capitalized on the public's declining interest in the styles both of those elements represent.
Warner's DC movies are going to be grim, boring, and dated. Marvel may be shallow but they're good at riding the trends of public opinion.

They have a large cast of diverse characters.
They have flashy special effects.

The problem isn't the tone, but Warner impatience to reap the lucrative superhero movie market. Marvel built their movie universe a piece at a time popularizing a series of B list heroes. Man of Steel wasn't perfect but it was a start, but Warner decided to go all out with BvS without perfecting the character of Superman with a second movie, let alone introducing the new Batman in a stand alone feature film. BvS feels really bloated and the brief titular battle fails to be engaging. It's just the two characters being dumb and manipulated instead of having a true philosophical difference. They can still develop it better in later movies but as it stands BvS is a wasted opportunity.

I don't think anyone is going to confuse them with classic films but they're certainly effective entertainments, to borrow a turn of phrase from Graham Greene. For one thing, Warner should be having comic book writers involved in script writing and producer roles. People who professionally develop their comic book properties should be involved across media in how they take shape.
People clearly don't like Snyder's version of these characters, the people who write the mainline comics are professionally vetted to write the characters in internally consistent ways. They get panned and booted if they break convention too much.
