The thing with Sony is they were massively cashed up from the 80s/90s when they actually made quality and innovative consumer electronics. They went on a massive spending binge, buying up everything they could to become a big movie studio (music too). They threw money at everyone bought heaps of back catalogs. They got alot of good stuff but WAY over-spent on so much. Then devalued alot of what they bought via mismanagement and poor decision making that they will never see a return on investment.
It was all driven because they wanted to have a propriety media format succeed after failing so many times. I guess they got what they wanted in the end but its was kind of like pouring $100 in to slotmachine to win $10.
Most of their war-chest from their heyday is gone, and now their consumer electronics that was their jewel in the crown is losing money too because they sell over-priced stuff that are same or inferior to their cheaper competitors.
