I heard JJ doesn't play action scenes in advance or story board, he just makes shit up when he gets to the set and shakes the camera enough to hide the fact that know one knows what they're supposed to be doing. Snyder knows how to film a good action scene so I think he's less of a hack as a director.

Everything he does has to be over polished and feels manufactured (even though I liked Super 8).
In Snyder's case, I believe he has a vision of what he wants the final product to look like, which is usually ambitious, but he just doesn't know how to bridge the gap between story/script, and the visual aesthetic
Ideally Snyder would take some DOP gigs and let a more talented director handle the meaningful stuff.

Snyder seems so completely out of his element making major motion pictures. JJ is very good at directing movies as a job. He knows how to make them and how to make them make money. It's hard for me to say who the bigger "hack" is but I think Snyder is a lot more interesting.
