I loved the acting, the dialogue, the characters, almost everything about it except the film's main message. It was just so depressing, nihilistic, and wrong to me. What am I suppose to learn from watching it all?

Actually the special efects were kinda shit in a lot of the scenes. There were just so many of them.
For example, the destruction scenes in War of the Worlds were much better done despite being less flashy.
I dont know if its because spielberg managed to create better tension or the casting was better but there is much less tension in 2012 and the shitty looking visuals dont help.

Why does everyone hate this film?

It's certainly not a "serious" movie - but was "The Hobbit" really a "serious" book? If anything, this animated movie captures the tone, atmosphere, and aesthetic of the book in a far better way than Jackson's stretched out nonsense.

I never understood the hate for this. I know people consider batman and robin the worst, but still I always hear a lot of hate for this movie, but I consider this movie basically tied with the dark knight. They're both better than each other in different ways.

Everything it skips, it skips without harm to the purpose of the story. You don't get the full picture, but the picture you get is about the same thing the original was.
