Simpsons always had a liberal slant but they also had the self-awareness to poke fun at themselves, or even explore the opposite viewpoint intelligently (look at Homer the Heretic or Lisa the Vegetarian).
They KIND OF do that now, but it's also one or two throwaway, token jokes. Bart will come out as transgender, Homer will say, "Uwha--? Like Mrs. Doubtfire? Not in my house!" and that's that.
Maybe it's just nostalgia or a side effect of the overall humour becoming worse, but there was a point when it didn't feel pandering or as forced.

He supported Mr. Burns' Republican run for governor, listened to the conservative radio talk show host, and supported Sideshow Bob's Republican run for mayor. It's not so much of a stretch that he'd be intimidated by a gay man becoming friends with the family.
