Read actual film criticism. Binge on director's filmographies and listen to the commentaries to find their inspirations and watch them, then repeat.

Oftentimes filmmaker's inspiration won't be any good. It just provided them the urge to produce their film. But the inspiration isn't necessarily always good. What film critic knows their shit, you tell me? All I know are lame-ass popcorn critics.
Start with the decennial Sight & Sound polls. What happened those films and then move on to other films made by those who directed films on the list.
Watch TCM.
Keep up with new releases by regularly checking review aggregators like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. Watch those films that are both well reviewed and seem interesting to you.
If you see a films you enjoy, watch other films by the same director.
