This. The "light" or energy or whatever was also the source of all lifes on earth, everyone had the light inside of them.
Why the fuck didn't the writers established this earlier in the show? No surprise that everyone got pissed. I remember some hints here and there, but the focus on that fucking alternate reality and zero exposition in the last season really fucked their shit up.
An alien spaceship
A turtle's shell.
all of the explanations at once, even the contradictory ones

>Why the fuck didn't the writers established this earlier in the show?
They wanted a big reveal rather than multiple smaller ones. Theory was sound but it failed in the execution.
>>67181003
this can be the only true answer
>>67180630
Then what was jacob
>>67183441
A greek kid I guess.
It was supposed to be purgatory, but everyone caught on quickly and they just strung out explaining the island over several seasons. Then they changed it so the island is just some place with literal magic or something but they also had their little faggy flash sideways to satisfy the purgatory theme and all of the normies that wanted a feel good ending.

An island sat on top of a huge electromagnitism pocket, which in LOST reality did some weird things on the island.
Like how Gamma Radation made Banner turn into a big monster.
>>67183519
Purgatory was after all the seasons off the island. nice b8 tho
>>67183570

that was original concept for the island, it changed though. That's what I'm saying.

fuck knows, it was blatantly down there before the Man in Black.
Maybe it took on the Man in Blacks form and started believing it was him just like it did with John Locke.
Fuck knows what it was though, just a spoopy Egyptian monster? Maybe formed from an Egyptian King back in the day who first fell into the hole.
I wish there was two episodes showing us well before when Jacob arrived.
inb4 they were dead the whole time
obligatory: MUY BAYBEE

WAAAAAAAAAAAAALT

The Man in Black's soul.
Jacob and MiB's "mother" used her guardian powers to ensure the twins could never kill one another.
So when Jacob threw MiB into the source, this should have killed him like it did others (the skeletons you see down there, also Jack too I guess) but because of this rule things got a bit funky and instead MiB's soul was ripped from his body, and he was forced to exist in that state.
It is strongly implied the "Mother" knew this would happen eventually, as she wanted out from the guardian role and it is also implied she was also a smoke monster.
it was purgatory
How did Jacob's and Smokey's mother kill all those people in the village?
Could she turn into smoke?
>>67185543
she was a strong independant woman
>>67185574
Women can't melt steel beams
Purgatory. They all died in the plane crash and were dead the whole time.
>>67185836
Theory has been wrong since the pilot episode.
what was up with that one scene when they show the whole island underwater?
>>67186028
It was purgatory and the island wasn't needed.

Does it matter? No matter what the actual explanation, you guys would have been unsatisfied. Sometimes letting the viewer decide / continue to theorize is the best way to handle things.
That said, LOST did answer nearly all the mysteries the writers came up with, only the major over-arching ones such as the purpose of the Island were left vague.

>Sometimes letting the viewer decide / continue to theorize is the best way to handle things.
That's the only answer to any of the questions of this show because Damon Lindelof wrote a Rorschach inkblot of a television show onto which everyone could project their own bullshit.
People always say there are answers to all the shows questions but read through the answers to this thread, there's no consistency. Even the people who defend the writing can't come up with similar answers to basic questions about the show.
