In reality the whites stuck to the coast of Africa (the interior was lethal) and purchased slaves from the natives Africans who were selling them. Most slaves that were shipped to the Americas were captured in African tribal wars and sold into slavery by their fellow Africans.

Slaves were captured in order to feed the European slave trade. Those blacks which worked for European slavers were doing so at the demands of their white overlords. Those blacks who refused to participate in the slave trade, those blacks were themselves enslaved or just killed if they resisted. Entire governments were deposed if they got in the way of the European slave trade.

Black kingdoms were capturing slaves to sell to other Africans and Arabs long before the Portuguese landed on the west coast of Africa. It was a business for them, and Europeans were just another customer. Nobody had to force them to capture slaves from surrounding tribes, they just had to offer something to trade.

Well, the author who wrote the original book it's based on got in big trouble for being exposed in making up most of it. He was never related to his supposed ancestor, and there are questions as to whether the ancestor ever actually existed in the first place.
He later went on to backtrack from calling it a historical account of his actual family history to it being a novel about a potential imaginary history. Basically, it's good fiction he tried to pass off as fact.
