I don't really mind it for Ragnar. I kind of like how he is torn between both religions. Playing with the traits of individuals in a historical context doesn't bother me too much since there is so much we don't and probably can't know about them. The general disposition of populations has much less room to fuck around with though. A Viking conversion happening in the show would definitely trigger me. Vikings who sympathize with Christendom should be an 'almost' nonexistent minority at this time.

Unfortunately, the way the show is going, they're probably just going to be a bigger and bigger part of the narrative.
I used to think the idea of shield maidens was really cool. It makes sense that there would be rare instances of badass women with the genes and/or determination required to fight on equal terms with men. The idea that ANY woman can just train for a while and be as effective as her male counterpart in battle is just ridiculous.
I've also always thought Valkyries were fucking awesome. I hope this show doesn't ruin them too.

The point is that when you fight as a unit, weak links are a liability. Sure if it's just a big brawl it's better to have more soldiers than less, regardless of strength. But despite the stereotype of Vikings being simple brawlers, they did employ tactics that require unit cohesion. Not to mention the fact that women would be very unlikely to even want to fight. Gender roles exist for a reason. They were biologically enforced before they were socially enforced and they still are. This doesn't mean that everyone will want to follow them, but most people will. Outliers exist and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's silly to pretend an outlier is the rule rather than the exception.
