What are some great movies that...
1) take place in a city
2) tell detailed stories that are close to "slice of life"
3) are low budget productions

While We're Young and Mistress America, by the same director. Both superior to Frances Ha.
Whit Stillman, Woody Allen, a few other Baumbach's, some French New Wave like 400 Blows, early Godard
75% of Woody Allen's filmography
I don't know tripdick but Frances Hehaw is a straight banger of a movie and super cathartic to enjoy before bed.

Move on to Kiarostami OP
'Where is the Friend's Home?' is in top 10 comfiest movies ever made, if admittedly not the "city life" you're after.
Another suggestion is to read more and then rewatch. Reading the right book before a rewatch can lead to something like watching a new movie

Stillman's stuff is fantastic.
The movie you're looking for is Girlfriends. It's like Frances Ha, except it's good.
