He wasn't unaffiliated. He's technically a member of "the Irish" and we do see Irish inmates working with him sometimes. Blacks and Hispanics tolerate him because he makes money. He's not a total Mary Sue but benefits from plot armor since his brother was a writer. Ryan is redeemed by love - for Dr. Nathan and his brother Cyril.
