>when they mention Uber
Why would you date your work in such a stupid way? It's like when you see shows/films mention Myspace. Is the creator's vision that shortsighted? Just say cab. It cheapens the scene, and when that shit doesn't exist anymore it's going to ruin it.
>>
>>67092456
They want the reddit audience.
>>
Why do they mention cars in movies? Why not just say horses and carriages like the good ol days. I hate this generation.
>>
>>67092456
why do people always say this? I've heard it, but never got it.

Are you in favour of technology never evolving, just to keep old records current?
>>
Because being a cab driver is different than being an Uber driver.

Did somebody say Uber? I invested in Uber when they were just starting out. Uber!
>>
>>67092500
It makes it a joke. 30 years from now if someone watches a movie with this shit on it audiences just laugh at the outdated reference. It ruins the scene, especially if it's meant to be serious.

Like if myspace is mentioned these days normies just laugh and talk about muh facebook.
>>
Venture Brothers is weird like that as the entire show takes place, at best, over the course of a year or two but the earlier seasons are full of dated references because of how long it takes for new seasons to get released. The Monarch has a Myspace page and they talk about posting a quicktime .mov to a webpage in an episode that predates youtubes existance (but later of course all online video references are to youtube). Then there are the pop culture references that wind up making it look like Battlestar Galactica and GoT aired at roughly the same time.
>>
>>67093809
Considering the show itself is a dated reference is that really a problem?
>>
>>67092913
so your reason is circular.
>it's shit because it's shit

cool.
>>
>>67092781
No one disputes this. The issue here is unfair competition. In many countries, to be a cab driver, you need a commercial driving license, pay for permits and higher road tax and insurance and have your vehicle inspected regularly. All these costs money. Uber drivers typically flout these requirements. I'm all for uber, but Uber drivers must obey the same requirements as current cab drivers.
>>
But cabs already are outdated.
>>
>>67092456

Uber is going to be around forever.

Deal with it.
>>
>>67094223
>he issue here is unfair competition.
Its not Uber's fault you guys ruined an industry with over regulation. Two wrongs do not make a right, if the competition is unfair, make better regulation, don't just fucking ruin a new industry to make it fair. That is really ridiculous logic
>>
>>67092913
>>67092456
You're right, it's as bad as product placement.

No, it IS product placement.
>>
>>67094310
No, that regulation exists for a reason. it's there to protect both the consumer and the company.
>>
>>67094328
Are movies set in the old west a joke because they have horses and do not drive cars?

What about 90s movies and dial up internet?
Or any movie before the advent of smartphones where people have fucking land lines and shit

Your premise is shitty
>>
>>67092456
im pretty sure that mentioning uber in shows/films is legitimate product placement
>>
>>67094382
You're an Uber shill.

Taxicab: a car that carries passengers to a place for an amount of money that is based on the distance traveled
>>
>>67094363
They may have been well intended (though thats very doubtful in small time municipal politics), but they have obviously failed. Most cities have created taxi monopolies by artificially capping the number of taxis which is some real anti-consumer shit, in return they get kick backs from the small handful of people who control the taxis that are allowed.

Overregulation has resulted in taxis being overwhelmingly shitty, inconvenient and overpriced in just about every city. The problem isn't Uber, its the taxis monopolies and politicians, you should be whining about them, not the peopel actually trying to fix the problem and create a consumer friendly business
>>
>>67094433
If your character is an elderly person it would make sense to have them get a taxi, but it would be entirely implausible for them to depict a millennial calling a taxi instead of an Uber like app. Why do anything besides make your characters act like actual normal people. It is fucking silly to write your characters to not do things the way people actually do them and instead do an outdated thing. There is just no logic behind doing that

Sounds more like you are a shill for the Taxi union

It's a show with a lot of contorted references. They good part is that they do so based on who's speaking. You have the middle aged group making Depeche Mode and Duran Duran references, their elders bringing up more Johnny Quest style moments. The references for teenagers are usually delivered by ill understanding adults.

they references may suck and be niche, but they have a structure to them versus say.... more buzz related parody shows.

ok, if you are too poor to afford a phone a watch could be a serviceable replacement for a small percent of its features, but that doesn't change the fact that almost all modern westerners carry a phone almost all the time

Every Uber is a potential rapist/murderer/angry driver.
You're still better off renting a cab
>>

because phones require power.
>>
That's a critical rule in writing is to never make references or mentions specific products in films cause it weighs the film down and will make it feel dated later on.
>>
>>67092456
Do porn theaters on every corner of NYC ruin your immersion in the Taxi Driver? It probably did in the 80s. Now it's just an historical fact. Same with the Myspace. People may laugh now, but they won't after the new best thing instead of Facebook comes. Like in 5 years.

But then again we all have our potential qualities. This anon has been on /b/ long enough everyone appears to be deranged.
>>
>>67095457
Uber is ubiquitous now, saying 'taxi' would make it sound way more dated
>>
>>67095533
>More dangerous than a cab.
Any metrics to back this up?

The Ubers I have been in are always nicer than typical cabs in the same city, and the drivers seem way less likely to be criminals, most cab drivers are sketchy as fuck while most Uber drivers just seem like random dudes
>>
>>67095674
its just that, more recently there has been a couple of cases of uber drivers going cuckoo.

I literally did not know what an Uber is, had to Bing it.
>>

> not realising that uber will have payed much monies to have there name mentioned.
>>
>>67095761
None of that suggests it is more dangerous than driving in a cab as no info on cabs is presented at all.

Also that site is clearly made by the cab lobby, pretty hard to take seriously. Also funny how if a guy who also at some point in time drives an Uber later commits a crime it is somehow Uber's fault? The metrics if taxis were held to that standard would be fucking hilarious
>>
>>67095674
Oh I fucking love Uber way more than cabs. I've had some sketchy drivers in my time, and I've heard more strange stories from Uber lifts than cabs. City cabs at least make some effort to cut you and the driver, sprawl cabs are rather good. But there are a few watchdog groups reporting the dozen or less Uber based crimes that make it online. By ratio Uber is still safer, but Uber also has no fucking quality control short of "we hope sane people work for us."

Pretty sure I got into an Uber calling up for hookers once.
>>
>>67095888
How? Even if you live in the middle of nowhere where Uber doesn't have a presence, they get media coverage all the fucking time
