If you ask me, they should kill RDJ. The iron man movies were pretty shit besides 1, and it's clear they have no intention to do anything interesting with iron man as a character. He's all the flashy, quippy, cool guy that the comics portrayed him to be, but none of the depth or alcoholism.
His "PTSD" would have been cool to see, but it was butchered by the movie trying to figure out whether it was going to be more serious or more for kids.

Everyone and their mothers expect Cap to kick the bucket like he did in the comics, and because they've already set up several possible replacements to take up his mantle. Imagine how shocked people would be if they went with the exact opposite outcome and shattered audience expectations by killing of THE fan favorite character. The nigga that started it all. People would flood en masses theaters to see the death of their beloved Iron Man.
They've already put it out there that RDJ has no interest in making more Iron Man movies, and Disney is bleeding money because of how much it costs to keep him on the cast.
Them benching him for a while before his inevitable "epic" revival in Infinity War part 2 is not really a stretch imo.
