I hate this show.
The first book was about how idiots like Quentin need to stop dreaming about being somewhere better and appreciate what they have. The absurdity of Quentin's failure to appreciate the world was highlighted by the fact that he went to not one but two magical paradises, and fucked up both experiences by being a misandrist cunt with misandrist cunt friends. The second book harped on more of the same (with a side of “be careful what you wish for”), and the third book rounded it out with “instead of being dissatisfied, you should take action to make the world a better place.” In other words, book Quentin is a tremendous weenie with literally nothing going wrong in his life whose abysmal mindset repeatedly manages to turn heaven into hell.
In the show, Quentin has actual problems that make him sympathetic (his depression) and Brakebills is a shitty dangerous hellhole (the Beast and all those ridiculous tests). And when you remove the theme of “stop being dissatisfied with paradise, you tremendous weenie,” all you have left is a bunch of barely-connected episodes of grown men and women acting bad facsimiles of Harry Potter scenes with extra sex and booze.
(Oh, and along the way, making Quentin sympathetic/making Brakebills dangerous while making Julia’s safe house life seem kind of cool eliminates the point of Julia, which is, to be Quentin’s foil. Quentin is handed everything and doesn’t appreciate it; Julia is given nothing and fights tooth and nail for it, suffering all the way, until she finally finds a place where she’s happy, and overreaches just a little too much and loses everything. In the show, it just sort of seems like Julia’s going to a hipper, streetsier version of Brakebills. I think more people have gotten horrifically mutilated in front of Quentin than they have in front of Julia.)
tl;dr this show missed the point of the books and has no soul.
Eliot and Margot/Janet are great though.

Quentin's whiny cuntiness makes the first half of the first book kind of slow -- he just sits around feeling vaguely superior and disconnected from everyone but Eliot and Alice while mundane, slice-of-life stuff at Brakebills unfolds around him.
One thing that really crystallizes the difference between the books and the show is the Beast's first appearance. In the show, the Beast's arrival is the result of Quentin and Alice (and Penny and Whatsherface) being proactive and trying to do something good (figure out what happened to Charlie Quinn). The Beast is interested in Quentin because Quentin is the Chosen One or something. It's all very Harry Potter-ish and magical: you try to do something good and it bites you in the ass because you're special. In the books: a professor calls on Quentin and Quentin can't answer. After a classmate distracts the professor, Quentin is feeling really petulant, so he starts fucking with the professor's podium, causing the professor to slightly mess up a complex spellcasting, resulting in the Beast entering Brakebills. There's nothing legendary about it. It's just Quentin wrecking things with his shit mindset.
I don't think you could depict book Quentin on screen. It would be like watching a time lapse of Bilbo going about his daily business smoking weed in the Shire -- it's cozy, but the character's sense that they should be doing something else really only exists in their head. But when the show team scrapped the "dissatisfied Quentin" theme, they should have replaced it with something else. Like I said before, without a central theme, the episodes seem disconnected and it's a soulless adult Harry Potter retread.
