Please recommend me some classic cinema. I'd like to widen my taste and watch some quality old movies. I enjoyed The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and A Farewell to Arms (1932).

What are some other films in this vein? You can suggest directors too.

Bumping for interest. I know some of you guys like classic cinema.

The Public Enemy 1931 and I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang

The thirties were a great time for cinema until the Hays Code got enforced

I love classic movies, but I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen either of those films. Regardless, you can't really go wrong with directors like Howard Hawks, John Ford, Frank Capra, Raoul Walsh or Billy Wilder.

These are good rec's, OP, all top-tier directors.

Some of the old Ealing output was deliciously dark.

I love Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Man in the White Suit, both starring Alec Guinness.

The Seventh Seal
Cranes are flying
Le Relevateur
Germany Year Zero
Citizen Kane

My favorite classic war film has got to be Objective Burma. It's surprisingly realistic and gritty for its time

Why? You can't expect specific recommendations like that. Maybe I assumed he might already know about the third man.

Westerns:
Rio Bravo
My Darling Clementine
The Searchers
El Dorado (which is pretty similar to Rio bravo)
Stagecaoch
(I could go on recommending John Ford movies)

Romance:
The Docks of New York (silent)
To have and have not
The Shanghai Express

Other:
Scarface (1932)
The Scarlet Empress
Intolerance (silent)
Dishonored

There are probably more I could mention but I think this is enough for you to get started. Hope you enjoy some of them.

Thanks for the rec anon, looks awesome.

Btw if that was supposed to be something other than rec, enlighten me because I didn't understand.

Some of these are from the 70s and they also aren't in English. I kind of assumed OP wanted classic Hollywood studio stuff.

Haxan is weird. It's an early documentary that also includes interesting stage recreations of the events described.

>silent films
I really wish I could learn to love them, but movies without dialogue are like Ambien to me.
>>
>>67038345
Will watch. I like weird stuff.

>>67038291
Yeah, I didn't bother mentioning that, but I think they are worth watching anyway. Personally I enjoy them more than hollywood stuff.
