I think Tarkovsky utilized an aesthetic that can be compared to the poetic movement of Imagism. He certainly disliked the semiotic conceptual approach to visual theory, focusing more on the surface itself - a sentiment shared by his idol Bresson. Only the pictures that were captured and projected were the primary means of expression, without any "deeper" meaning attached to them, and they were rendered with painstakingly minimalist techniques. Thus all that remained on screen, be it the shot of the throbbing temple of the soldier-instructor in The Mirror or the mysterious and exhausting pool crossing in Nostalghia, was the image - pure, poetic and transcendentally powerful.

What did the final shot of Nostalghia mean? What was the main, underlying message of the film?

The significance of the final shot is that his homeland and the church ruin come together in unity. Two things that are impossible to be together, two things he longs for; faith and home. Faith simply because he doesn't believe, and his home is simply far away. It's like these two longings are reconciled when he dies.

It's hard to pin down an underlying message. A lot of it stems from Tarkovsky's personal life. The eastern philosophy, his exile from his homeland, and the spiritual aspect. He really tries to get that eastern philosophical concept of unity across in this film. The two main characters are essentially one being. There's a lot of blatant imagery that suggests this. Domenico explains this one-plus-one concept early on and it is a constant throughout the film. But the characters, while share the same despair, are very different. They manifest that despair in different ways. Even though Domenico seems crazy, Tarkovsky wants us to see the truth in the character. He's a symptom of the time. Society led him to this state of mind.

Andrei is faithless while Domenico is quite the opposite. He's a martyr that dies for his cause. Something like a Jesus Christ or Socrates figure. The candle that Andrei carries is supposed to, as Domenico puts it, save the world if he's able to cross the length of the pool with it. At the same time Andrei carries out this duty, Domenico sets himself on fire and kills himself in the name of peace and unity in society. Whether this comes true for society is unseen, but it comes true for Andrei in the end of the film. All of this could be coincidental. The characters being the same, the deaths occurring for the same objective goal, but we should have faith that it's truth. Faith, something that's been lost in this day and age.

It's a great film. I'd put it on par with Mirror.

Bresson focused more on narrative than shallow imagery, my friend.

I'd also like to point out the significance of the candle scene. Domenico tells everyone why he carries the candle across the pool, but they won't let him because they think he's crazy. That's society getting in the way of him saving the world.

There's also some early on dialogue that foreshadows the self-immolation scene. At the beginning of the film the woman tells the story of the maid who set fire to her employer's house. She did it so she could get back home to her family.

Andrei sympathizes with Domenico because he's everything he's not. It's why he spends so much time with him when everyone thinks he's crazy. Andrei lets himself get in the way of things he wants, while Domenico is stopped by other people.

What's always puzzles me is that Tarkovsky was considered entry level in Russia when I was a child. Like, say, PTA now in America. But in retrospective, he isn't really.

If there's one thing /tv/ likes more than anything it's shitposting. Simply a reaction to all the love Tarkovsky got, trying to get a rise out of people.

Great post. I also took the final shot to be a unifying of Italy and Russia, as it's an Italian church and a Russian home. In that sense, it harkens back to Andrei's comment about the need to abolish borders.

And I also took the unity of Domenico and Andrei to be Tarkovsky commenting on how the artist and the madman are indistinguishable. From all rational positions, painting or singing or filmmaking doesn't make any "sense." There's no point to it, unless you have faith: faith that what you're doing, no matter how crazy it seems, you can save the world with art. And I'm sure Tarkovsky realized Christianity has waned significantly in the world, so relgious faith probably has to be supplemented with cultural faith and art.
