She's not African American. White people cannot be African American, the term is used for blacks who have African heritage, however due to the practice of slavery their distinct heritage has been completely wiped away and likely impossible to know so their ethnicity is defined by the broader continent as a whole since we can't know what specific country they're from. Charlie Theron is South African American, if she was born in Kenya then she would be Kenyan American, but no matter what as a white person she would never be African American.

Well Tina Fey spent 7 years after that doing 30 Rock so I imagine that had something to do with it.
She probably could have made some more great comedies if she had spent her prime years focusing on screenplays.
