pretty much the opposite of the 50s-70s NY youth gangs, which really did start to unify and self organize to minimize violence and fight back against a very real racially motivated harassment from police.
The new gangsters like the LA barrios, the Crips/Bloods, and all those guys started to fall apart quick, infighting, killing each other, the crips turned into east/westside and now only exists as a bunch of tiny civil warring sets. The Mexican Mafia took over all the Hispanic gangs and made them kick up hard, and basically started eating their own for more 'taxes'.
Nowadays if you're a kid in an LA or NY ghetto, you wana rap or play basketbal/footbal, and no gangster shitholes will even scare you anymore. The cops work with neighborhoods and the FBI/DEA openly *unlike before* and even use RICO and gang injunctions to lock up the minor members (they no longer care about the leadership - the whole cut off the head thing doesn't work). Gangsters run scared nowadays, they don't care about territory and they couldn't hold any even if they wanted to. They are bleeding out, care only about money, and do most their shit online now, like the cowards they always were.
