So you were disappointed because of "memes"? Sounds like you've been here for too long and just maybe you were doomed from the start and not able of actually appreciating the film.
Gosling's character is supposed to be appear "autistic". From what I understand he's a guy whose only frame of reference of the real world has been through the world of films, which is why he became a stunt driver. The way Gosling plays the character is spot on. He's living in a fantasy so disconnected, that he can't interact with other people on a human level. He's basically playing a character inside the film.
