Is this a must see? Or is this going to be boring since it's from the 90s?

My brother told me I gotta watch it, but he tends to be a massive troll that gives bad advice on purpose.
>>
>>66813965
I really liked it. It's pretty imaginative sci-fi, and it's got a great cast, what more do you want.
>>
Directors cut is slightly better.
>>
>>66813965
6/10, decent but looks a bit cheap
>>
>>66813965
I'm not sure why 90s=boring, how old are you?
>>
>>66813965
I like it. Kind of the matrix before there was the matrix sort of movie.

>Where is Shell Beach?

>Mr. Book
>Mr. Hand

Also why would the decade known for EXTREEEEEME ever have boring as your go-to?
>>
>>66813965
It's awesome. Very entertaining.
>>
It's good you fuck.

Are you really sure you know what you are talking about? Because I think /tv/ is going to strongly disagree with this statement. Brace for glory anon.
>>
I movie hopped with my dad and saw this, Analyze This, and Matrix in one day

what happened to movie quality srs
>>
>>66813965
If your brother is recommending this as a troll his taste is probably very refined. 90% of the people who have heard of this movie think it's GOAT and inspired The Matrix or something. It's okay.

Watch Hardware instead.
>>
>>66814086
Ha, the first time I watched The Matrix I thought it was just Dark City mixed with Blade.
>>
>>66814149
I can't even see the yellow werds WTH Anon?!
>>
>>66814410
>Hardware

I like you
>>
>>66814535
Cool, but the true test lies behind this spoiler box.
>>
>>66814086
>>66814455
The Matrix used some sets that were in Dark City.
>>
>>66814410
Hardware is a sweet flick, but idk if I would put it that much further above Dark City. I mean it's more like a long-ass music video than anything.

You're not a patrician until you realize that 'substance' is a meme and it's all about style.

I want to believe this. Do you have a citation? I think I know which one too.
>>
>>66814678
Pretty sure they were filmed in the same city, which might or might not be Sydney, I don't remember. I'm not the other anon btw.
>>
>>66813965
It's one of Ebert's all time favorites.
>>
>>66814852
fox studios, sydney
>>
>>66814678
>The Matrix was released one year after Dark City and was also filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney using some of the same sets

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_City_(1998_film)

If you google around there are some people that even accuse the Wachowskis sisters of ripping off a bunch of stuff.

Yeah it's a good film. Solid 7
>>
>>66815103
>>66814852
Yeah, i remember Sydney was going to be the new mecca of Hollywood when filming in the late 90s....
...Then everyone woke up and realised that Australia is too fucking expensive.
>>
>>66815386
It'll be nice and cheap in the future once China buy the entire country out from under our feet and then ruin it by being Chinese.
>>
its good
make sure its the directors cut that eliminates the opening narration
>>
>>66815416
>she'll be rite m8
>>
>>66814032
>looks a bit cheap
no it doesn't
in fact if you want cheap then consider the fact that The Matrix reused its sets
>>
>>66815386
That really falls on the government. Canada was smart enough to give the studios a ton of tax incentives to film there. A ton of movies set in Washington are actually filmed in BC.
>>
>>66815386
govt did exactly what they did the last time the australian industry really started to get good. changed the tax laws. a paranoid autist might draw conclusions from that.
>>
>>66815426
>she'rr be rite, ferrow factory worker
>>
It's pretty bad
>>
>>66815349

Fuck the 70s. Fuck YOU

>>66813965

Tell me what movie suggestions he trolled you with, I have a creeping suspicion you're the faggot in that situation
>>
>>66815386
It was going to be the mecca and was briefly because of the low Australian dollar
Then it began to rise/American dollar began to drop - it depends on your perspective
>>
>>66815480
The Australian film renaissance of the 1970s/1980s was fueled by tax breaks. You could get back on your taxes whatever you invested in film, in fact even get more back
That slowly got rolled back, there was some rorts of the system and also films like Road Games which cast Americans in all the leads

Today the primary funding comes from Film Finance Australia
An arts grants council
And an arts grants council funds the sort of film makers who have to apply for art grants
Pretentious arty wankfests full of subtext so deep it hits you over the head with it
David Michods films are a good example
The dreary depressing Aussie drama has even become a joke here superseding the 'quirky aussie comedy' of the 90s
>>
>>66815592
The first systems seems like a better way to cultivate a system that actually exports Australian media. It would be nice if people knew more about Australia than the Crocodile Hunter and kangaroos. Government subsidized media always seems to make niche products. I'm kinda just repeating what you said, though.
>>
>>66813965
Really good but for the love of god if you're watching the theatrical cut fast forward through the intro until you see someone in a bathtub.
>>
>>66813965
A lot of christfags love it because they see the city as a perfect representation of earth's simulation like life and real life starts in heaven once you get out.
>>
>>66814032
wow fucking wow
this place has really went to shit
>>
>>66813965
Watched it as a teenager, blew my mind

Watched it ten years later, actually a bit of a mess and not nearly as clever as it thinks it is.

But if you're lacking a Noir hit, go for it!

One bad opinion doesn't change the fact this place has always been shit, anon.
>>
>>66815798
It's a story that's been told for a long time. The Matrix writers thought it was good enough to rip off.
>>
>>66815883
>The Matrix
>A Dark City rip-off
Educate yourself
>>
>>66815950
The Matrix ripped off a ton of stuff anon. Even some Ghost in the Shell scenes shot for shot.
>>
>>66815950
You're more likely to find something The Matrix ripped off than kill myself I fucking hate you so god damned much stuff it didn't rip off.
>>
>>66816028
I know that, the poster I posted is from a movie that the Ghost in the Shell director made before Ghost in the Shell. it's better than Ghost in the Shell

The Matrix is the highper subcul pulp work. You guys mentioned name name, but they do fit in flow, don't they ?
>>
Marathon the first hour and seven minutes, then promptly stop. It's downhill from there and ruins any mysteriousness it had.
>>
>>66814678
Yeah its legit. It was the spiral staircase and some of the rooftops that were re-used. It even had very similar lighting.

Oh Alex, this was just painful to see from you
>>

dont post a poster without saying what it is-what is this movie?
>>
>>66813965
Imagine the Matrix, but instead of bullet-time fight scenes, you have intense staring and "acting"
>>
>>66820357
Well there is a sort of fight scene at the end tho.
>>
>>66819944
Those first two are fantastic, but fuck, I robot, what was he thinking.
>>
>>66814032
this, it has a good story but it looks like a b production tv show
>>
>>66816079
Did you watch Avalon?
Is it good?
>>
>>66813965
Dark City is a pretty good see.

Don't go in with high expectations, though. If you go in expecting a "ground-breaking" movie then yes you will be disappointed. Just watch it with an open heart.
>>
It has a pretty amazing score.
>>
And Jennifer Connelly looking hot.

And Melissa Georges tits.

First third of Dark City is incredible, second third ehhh I'll see how it plays out, final third holy shit this film was awful
>>
>>66813965

10/10

It's great from every angle.
>>
>>66813965

Movie of my childhood I like it, it's if like Tim Burton made Matrix, recommended it to my friend and he also liked it.
>>
>>66813965
there's some neat imagery, but the acting sorta ruins it because it's really bad
