If anything Tom Cruise is underrated. He's very possibly the greatest action movie star of all-time, has delivered great dramatic performances throughout the decades, starred in Magnolia (PTA's masterpiece), Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Jerry Macguire, Risky Business, Days of Thunder, Minority Report. The list goes on, but the point is, Tom Cruise is a fucking badass. He just replaced Brendan Fraser as the new Mummy guy, despite being about 20 years older than Fraser was as the Mummy guy.
Tom Cruise is inarguably the greatest manlet actor of his generation.

For his generation of young men in the 80s? He is the best, yes. Really, who is a better action star than Cruise? Even today while most of his contemporaries have gone into more dramatic roles, Tom Cruise is STILL pumping out great Mission Impossible movies and sci-fi thrillers. And this is a man with a giant legacy of great action and drama roles to his name.
