He was the greatest actor ever 1973-2001 maybe to 2004, he was good in the Meet The fockers (2004)

Since then he has been criticised for the bad films but is it just the films that arr bad, or are his performances in them bad?

The Most recent film i have seen with him is Everybody's Fine (2009) which was quite good.

I guess. It used to be if there was something in the script he didn't like and thought was stupid he just refused to say the line.

Now he just does everything they tell him to.
>>
>>66746340
Still? No. He lost the spark, it happens to most artists when they reach older age. Now he just works because he likes to work. I don't feel it taints his legacy though.

Was good in Silver Linings Playbook
>>

Hasn't robert de niro pretty much only been playing supporting roles in the past 15 years?
>>
>>66746340
He's already made his mark on film. Now he's happy to be in JUSTcore till he retires.
>>
Being in bad movies doesn't mean you're a bad actor you fucking moron.

Shut up.
>>
He was good in Everybody's Fine as the main actor and he was good supporting in Silver linings and a great cameo in American Hustle he looked murderous even in his 70s
>>
Well he's done some bad movies in recent years as well as movies where it's clear he's just there for the paycheck.
>>
>>66746540
probably the last De Niro role I actually enjoyed him in
>>
i always thought he was mostly overrated and a very one dimensional actor. i still like a lot of his older work though
>>
Midnight Run is really underrated

De Niro has never been the greatest actor. Even in Taxi driver, wich is the movie most people would state as his greatest work, he's uneven an at times seems like he's struggling with grasping what the script is supposed to convey. His extreme type of method acting often makes his performances seem zaney, in lack of a better word. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a very talented performer, but to call him the greatest actor ever would be to take it way too far. I don't think he's gotten much worse lately, but it looks like he's lost a lot of his motivaton, his spark if you will, and like he doesn't really care anymore.

Raging Bull's the best performance of all time though bro. Also The King of Comedy
>>

You seem personally offended by this. lol
>>
>>66748281
Best de Niro performance, yes.
>>
>>66748281
why is it his best exactly? because he gained a dangerous amount of weight in a short period?

>Robert De Niro
>Born: August 17, 1943 (age 72)

There ain't that many amazing roles for 72 year olds. His choice of films was almost flawless until he got old and started grabbing whatever he could. Same shit happened to Pacino.
>>
His latest performances just aren't that challenging
I mean look at his role in the movie with Anne Hathaway, he was fine, but that's all there is to it; nothing special.

>>66748253
How does method acting make a performance zaney? I think method acting works really well for De Niro, better than it does for DDL.

Kind of reminds me how Jake's sister complained about how she couldn't play a young gf any more. Of course you can't when you look 10 years older than what you really are. Obviously it's unfortunate that they got old and don't really get any of the kinds of roles they used to get, but that's show business.

Expendables 4
RED 3

Pachino, DeNiro, Busey
>>
He was always a meme actor for plebs.

Exactly
>>
>Guy plays the same role in every film. He's considered a great actor.
>Another guy, you have to cast your mind back at the end of film because characterisation was so successful you forgot who the actor playing the part was. He's considered Brad Pitt's mexican non-union equivalent.

I think he takes his characters so seriously, and takes the pretending to a point where it actually seems like he thinks it's real, and that he actually thinks he's a different person. And I think that shines through, his performances often seem like I'm watching a crazy person who thinks he's someone else. I agree that he's better than DDL, who is a literall cartoon, but I think people like Dustin Hoffman, PSH and Jake Gyllenhaal (yes, seriously) takes greater use of method acting. They don't pretend to be other people, but try to explore and portray other people through a thorough study of every aspect of their persona, and use all time they have to do so, without going overboard, still being themselves.
>>
>>66752305
what specific De Niro roles are you referring to?
>>
>>66752439
Taxi driver, greetings, Deer hunter, godfather 2, the king of comedy, Brazil, heat, casino, untouchables, goodfellas, cape fear, jackie brown, copland.

His best are Raging Bull, Awakenings and Once upon a time in America, allthough he's really pushing his limits in that one.
>>
>>66746340
It doesn't matter if he is or isn't because none of his films are worth seeing any more.

Ronin was his last good one.
>>
>>66746340
He never was, just had some great roles
>>
>>66746340
So why the fuck do I see this kid everywhere on /tv/? Is it some kind of hidden meme?
>>
>>66752305
Method acting doesn't matter unless you're fundamentally a good actor
Dustin Hoffman and PSH are great actors, with or without method acting
The greatest actors ever, that I can think of, literally don't think twice about their characters
>>
>>66753217
Both DH an PSH are two of the greatest actors ever and they both care(d) a great deal about their characters. As did Olivier, even though his work as an actor was more based on the performance itself. The only actor this might be more than 70% accurate for is Brando post Apocalypse now.
