I hated that they always tried to make the people dying into extremely bad people or just ass holes, I understand why they did it but I would have been more engrossed if it depicted normal people just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

in reality most of them didn't deserve it and most of the deaths were a simple accident.
They just literally fabricated like 90% of the stories of how it happened themselves. Usually making the person look like a jackass so it people don't have to deal with the fact most of the people were normal people with relatively normal lives, families, and all that, just unfortunate or making a single stupid mistake.

I remember hearing that news story when it broke, so seeing it on 1,000 Ways to Die was the first time I realized that these were ways that people actually fucked up and died. Prior to that I thought its assertions as to it being rooted in fact was just for effect, a la Fargo.
