It would have been an absolute crime if this did not get a Best Visual Effects Oscar and the reason why they're so good is that you know there's CGI going on, but you're not sure what is CGI. Is it Ava's entire body? Or just the mechanical-looking bits? Does her face occasionally look fake because of the effects, or because it's supposed to? The CGI in the film plays with the same ideas of reality and artifice that the plot and characters do, but in this case, the question is left up to the viewers.

True Detective was pretty good in the first season when they shot that guy in the head. I was really impressed after being used to zombies getting shot in the head and it looking like it was done in 5 minutes in after effects. I think they used a blend of practical and CGI which is cool because the body is out of focus for the rest of the scene.
