In the movie the Mayans are going on a massive human sacrifice binge. In real life it was the Aztecs that would have done that. Also, the Mayans weren't a major civilization by the time the Spanish got there. Again, that was the Aztecs. Still worth watching though.

Mayans committed human sacrifices just as the Aztecs did; what differentiated them was the fact that the Aztecs had WHOLE nother scale and purpose to it. Mayans would sacrifice during a bad harvest (which is actually mentioned in the movie if IIRC) or after a ballgame tournament as a gift to the gods, but the Aztecs straight up believed they lived in the last age of the world, and that the only thing keeping the sun alive was slicing thousands of motherfuckers open every year. And they were kinda correct; the Aztec farming system was shit and they were outgrowing their own food supply, so they had to keep the population down. Plus human flesh supplemented the Aztec food supply, since the average diet was mostly grain with little protein.
And, while the Mayans by the time of the Spanish arrival pretty much collapsed as a larger society, there still many small city states and tribes of Mayans left over. The Mayans even organized an "insurgency" against the Spanish all the way up until the early 17th century.
So, while the movie had other historical inaccuracies (such as the ceremonies and frescos/architecture) the basic premise isn't in accurate. I mean for ffs Mel Gibson had the whole film done in the native Mayan language by native Mayans in Mexico.
