I'm with you, OP. While I liked The Big Short and Spotlight as modern dramas, they weren't clever, as well written, and well acted as, say, The Social Network. Where as Mad Max was a total acheivement in it's genre. I would've given my vote to Max.
I guess it's best to just give in to the politics and accept that a movie about a Jew who helps malign the Catholic Church is going to appeal a bit more to the old Jews who are in charge of the Oscars.
