I never quite figured out whether Littlefinger really loved Catelyn Stark or whether he viewed her just another stepped on the ladder. The show never made that clear. They never showed him doing anything that would prove his love - some sort of selfless act to benefit her. He kept saying that he loved her, but it's been shown time and again that you can't take his word for anything. I think the showed fucked up in that regard, because it would have made him more sympathetic, instead of just "le scheming man"
